New Edition of Machine Safeguarding Standard is Published - CSA Z432-16

Did you know that a new edition of CSA Z432 has just been released? CSA Z432 is the Canadian standard for safeguarding machinery and is the main standard referenced in health and safety regulations across the country. Kristin had the opportunity to sit on this committee and participate in the review and revision of this standard. Considering that the last re-write of this standard took place over ten years ago, you will find that this third edition looks quite different than the previous. To find out more about what has changed, see below.

One of the first major changes you will notice is that Z432-16 makes mandatory references to ISO 13857:15 – Safety of machinery – Safe distances to prevent hazard zones being reached by upper and lower limbs. Therefore it is highly recommended that if you purchase Z432-16, that you also purchase CAN/CSA-ISO 13857:15. This ISO standard has many great tools for calculating safe distances of guards and there was too much relevant content to allow adoption into the CSA standard itself.

Another major change is the adoption of ISO 13849 methodology for category of circuit structure. While the previous edition of Z432 explained safety circuits in terms of simple, dual-channel and dual-channel with monitoring, the third edition of Z432 instead describes circuits in terms of category levels (Category B, 1, 2, 3 & 4).

New information has been added on topics that are becoming increasingly important in industry such as laser safety, ergonomics, information for use, human factors, energy isolation, non-mechanical hazard identification and new technology for safeguarding controls.

You will find many of the sections look quite different in an effort to harmonize with international standards and the appendix has grown to include many more tools for practical use. If you are interested in learning more about the changes to CSA Z432: Safeguarding of Machinery please contact us!
